Camp Blessing exists to show the hope of Jesus Christ to those with special needs, their caregivers, and the volunteers who serve them in a barrier-free camp environment emphasizing love, acceptance and fun.
Camp Blessing is an 11-year-old, award-winning, Christian summer camp ministry designed for children with special needs (physical/developmental/intellectual disabilities) to experience a week-long residential, barrier-free camp surrounding them with love, acceptance and fun. Since inception more than 6,300 campers/volunteer counselors have experienced this life-changing ministry.
Our campers are treated like rock stars! Individuals 7-years and older with a primary diagnosis of a physical, developmental or intellectual disability and their siblings (ages 7-13) are invited to join us as campers. Siblings ages 14+ have the opportunity to volunteer at camp as a SOTK. We offer 8 weeks of camp each summer for children ages 7-13, one week of camp for young adults and one adult week.
We are one of the few camp ministries in the country offering all of the traditional summer camp activities customized for full participation for all levels of abilities including wheelchair, crutch, and walker users. Camp Blessing is focused on showing the encompassing love of Christ to those who often experience exclusion, ridicule and self-esteem-damaging treatment by peers. Campers are thrilled to participate in the barrier-free gamut of activities including; horseback riding, archery, canoeing, fishing, swimming, ropes course, zip line, crafts, variety show, sports, water games, and more. Three out of four return annually calling it the best week of their year. As a matter of fact, 14 of our original 17 campers, are still having a blast with us as campers!
Camp Blessing utilizes a committed force of volunteer counselors (code name: SOTK!) who donate time and money for the opportunity to serve. Volunteer counselors are trained and supervised by a small, experienced, paid staff allowing a 1:1 camper-to-counselor ratio ensuring the enjoyment for campers, comfort of parents, and mission field for volunteers. Volunteer counselor exit surveys track a 97% satisfaction rating and there is a waiting list for those wanting volunteer positions.
Our Board of Directors–
A fiscally responsible program with solid financials, and 100% board backing, the Board is taking strategic steps to ensure the future of this critical program. For 10 years, Camp Blessing subsisted by renting and retrofitting several campgrounds on the outskirts of Houston/East Texas each summer. This method created issues regarding site availability, capacity, waste, identity, and has revealed the demand for facilities for this growing population.
In order to develop a long-term plan for camp, Camp Blessing purchased a beautiful 158-acre retreat facility in Brenham, Texas in summer 2016 to build a permanent home for camp. The Capital Campaign is raising funds to customize the facility allowing barrier-free summer use and expansion into year-round operation as a self-sustaining retreat available to special needs focused programs and other organizations. We are thrilled to say we are on track to host camp summer ’17 in our new facility!
The construction of this facility will allow Camp Blessing to; serve campers from Houston, Brenham, College Station, Austin, and San Antonio; save more than $150,000 in annual rental fees; and convert the summer camp into a year-round, self-sustaining ministry.
The Camp Blessing Team graciously appreciates, and depends on, your volunteerism, monetary support and in-kind gifts. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about God’s growing ministry and we hope you come visit us here in the heart of beautiful bluebonnet country. Call or email us to get involved.
